Another Good Day...

Another good day in the competition and we've managed to retain our position in first place. We collected a total of 88 Colgate boxes today, including 60 from our own classes and 28 from a couple of schools who are helping us. We have been so lucky to have such great support so far and we are always on the lookout for other schools/businesses/families who might be willing to help out. Keep spreading the word so we can end the week on the top of the table :)

1st Place!

This week has been a great week for us so far! Yesterday we collected the most boxes we have in one single day with nearly 400, and we hit 1st place for the first time! This has been awesome for the motivation of the students and school and now we just need to maintain it for 30 more days! We have been discussing many different strategies to get more boxes so watch this space... :)

Our Goal!

Okay, this is the winning school from last year. 9,077 boxes!! What an amazing effort! We really have our work cut out, but we can do it! We need all of the help we can get to try and break the record! :)

Monday's News!

97 boxes today and the in-school competition we organised is hotting up! After being assigned a class each, we have been busy encouraging, collecting boxes, and updating our classes on their position in the competition. The few of us who didn't get assigned a class to represent have also been busy collecting and analysing data, opening and sorting boxes, and making sure our edmodo site is up to date! We're really starting to work as a team and hopefully we've made up some ground on the top 2 schools!

Edmodo Group

Join our edmodo group by typing in the group code apae5h. By becoming a member of the group you will be able to view photos, videos, and graphs of our progress in the competition so far. You will be able to see world maps of all the helpers we have from around the world and you can ask questions and communicate with children from different parts of the world (including all of us from Studio 21). It's getting bigger by the day, so become part of this awesome learning experience with us! :)

Buy Bulk!

No one saw the marmite crisis coming, so what better way to prepare for future crises than by buying bulk?! Why not stock up on 10 tubes of colgate toothpaste next time you’re at your local supermarket?

... No room in the bathroom cabinet you may be thinking?
Well let us take those bulky colgate boxes off your hands! Kaiapoi Borough School needs your help to assist us in collecting as many empty colgate boxes as possible! We specialize in colgate box retrieval and will gratefully accept any empty boxes you have to help us try and win $12,500 worth of sports gear for our school. So brush those pearly whites twice a day and hold on to those boxes! Competition finishes June 29th.

Ice Cream + Colgate = Delicious!

Why buy mint flavoured ice cream when you can buy vanilla and chuck some colgate toothpaste on top! Who said ice cream was bad for your teeth?!
Kaiapoi Borough School needs your help! We need as many empty colgate boxes as we can get! So brush those pearly whites twice a day and hold on to those boxes! Competition finishes June 29th.

Good morning tooth brushers!

Good morning tooth brushers! When you next treat your teeth to a cleaning, ask yourself... "am I using colgate?" If you are shout, "Wohoo, now I can help Kaiapoi Borough School by keeping the box!" If you aren't, then think... "Next time I'll buy colgate so I can help Kaiapoi Borough School by keeping the box!" And if you've thrown the box in the bin, feel guilty for 10 seconds, then fish it out. Or take that guilt all the way to the supermarket where you can buy another tube, yussss!

Our school is collecting empty colgate toothpaste boxes in the colgate carton race and we're currently in 3rd place! We need all the boxes we can get so if you have any, hold on them and we can come and pick them up or you can flatten them out and send them to our school. Any help will be massively appreciated :)

Aftershock!

After learning about the science of earthquakes this afternoon, we experienced a 5.5 magnitude aftershock... talk about coincidence! Aside from that, we've maintained our 3rd place in the competition leading in to the weekend. This week has been the our most successful week so far in terms of collecting, so lets keep the momentum going!

Calling All Tooth Brushers!

We are a class of 25 eleven and twelve year olds from Kaiapoi Borough School in North Canterbury, New Zealand and we are collecting empty COLGATE toothpaste boxes as part of the ‘Awesome Colgate Carton Race’.
We are entering two aspects of the competition. The first is to collect as many colgate toothpaste boxes as possible, and the second is to use our creative skills to turn those boxes into a masterpiece so we can win one of the creativity prizes.
This year the theme of the competition is athletics and sports, so we are hoping to create a life-size Olympic sculpture with a New Zealand athlete standing at the top, using the boxes we collect. The more colgate toothpaste boxes we have, the more elaborate our sculpture will be, and the better chance we will have at winning a prize!
The school who collects the most empty colgate toothpaste boxes will win $12,500 worth of brand new sports equipment for their school, and there are also prizes for coming second and third. There is $5,000 worth of brand new sports equipment up for grabs in the creativity section as well, so we are very excited at the prospect of potentially winning some fantastic prizes for our school, which is still somewhat rebuilding after the series of earthquakes that have hit Christchurch over the last year and a half.
If anybody is able to assist us in our quest to collect empty colgate toothpaste boxes we would be hugely appreciative! Whether you’re from Kaiapoi, Christchurch, New Zealand, or overseas, you can help make a difference from something as small as keeping a colgate toothpaste box, instead of throwing it in the rubbish. So ring your relatives, speak to your sports teams, talk to your neighbours, and ask your workmates; any help will be gratefully accepted! The competition finishes on the 29th of June 2012 so we don’t have too much time.
We have created an edmodo group and are in the process of making a website to keep all of the people who help, up to date with our progress throughout the competition. We will be updating this regularly with photos, videos, graphs and blogs of our collection and Olympic sculpture, and the link will be attached to our school website www.kbs.school.nz.
Any empty colgate toothpaste boxes (flattened is fine) that have been collected can either be sent or dropped off to the address listed at the bottom of this page, or a pick up from a house or workplace (even if it is in the city) can easily be arranged by calling us on 327 7231 Extn 221 or emailing class teacher Dan George on daniel.g@kbs.school.nz. For your convenience, we are aiming to put collection bins outside the local Kaiapoi supermarkets, so you can remove the toothpaste tubes and put the boxes straight into the bins provided.

General Information

Hi everyone,
Our class from Kaiapoi Borough School, North Canterbury, New Zealand, is currently involved in a competition to collect empty colgate toothpaste boxes and we are trying to recruit classes from all over the world to help us. We would love it if any classes/schools out there would like to take up the challenge and collect some empty boxes for us. We have already had teachers from USA, Canada, Australia, England, Indonesia, and Spain, express interest, which is fantastic!
The competition been an awesome learning experience for my kids and we have managed to integrate maths, literacy, and geography as well as learning all about marketing and advertising. The children are a very resilient and deserving bunch from a school that was hit hard by the Christchurch earthquakes last year, and we are hoping to win $12,500 worth of sports gear to replenish our P.E sheds in a tough financial year, which has seen our school roll drop to the lowest it's ever been.
After discussion with the class we have decided to set our sights high. We have created an edmodo group to show our progress in the competition, and we now have the goal of trying to get one class from every state in America to join and help us with our collection. We are also keen to get as many classes/schools from as many countries as possible onboard so if you are interested please let us know!
All classes that help us out will be able to collaborate with our students and will receive letters from us to thank them for their efforts. So if you're keen or know people who might be able to help out, reply underneath or pass on the message and we can let you know all of the details. It's amazing what a little school in New Zealand can do with the help of others.
Look forward to hearing from you,

Maths Link!

Our maths class have been using our collection of colgate boxes to help us learn about volume. We have been measuring the boxes and calculating how much space is inside them. It has been very interesting to compare different sized boxes and see how much bigger and smaller the different volumes are. We have also been applying mathematics to our competition by graphing our progress and working out how many boxes per person, our school has collected so far. It goes to show that maths is all around us!

Third Place on Thursday!

Today we moved into the top 3 for the first time since we began collecting colgate boxes, which was very exciting! Due to close nature of the competition we moved back to fourth place after Ponsonby Intermediate updated their tally, but we fought our way back to end the day in third place after Mr George received a bag of 40 boxes from one of his friends. The in school competition seems to be going well, and we nominated a Studio 21 member to represent each class in our school and collect the boxes from them each day. Tyla, Nicole, and Shannan also put forward a proposal to Mr Maindonald, that we have a mufti day, where instead of donating money, people donate a colgate toothpaste box! We look forward to updating our total that day! :)

New York Poster!

Wednesday's Progress!

We made it into fourth place today after we added the 39 boxes we collected onto our total! Hopefully we can keep up the momentum and move into the top three! George and Trent did a great job updated the school on our progress at Whanau Time and they also introduced the idea of a class competition amongst the rest of the school! Everyone seemed excited so lets hope their enthusiasm turns into more boxes! :)

What a Monday!

Today we had our most successful day so far! We got 168 toothpaste boxes after the weekend's collecting and we also received our first overseas package from New York, which was incredibly exciting! The competition is getting really intense and after the day's action we currently sit in 6th place. We were in 5th at one stage today but got pushed down to 6th by the end of the day. We had a discussion about strategies between now and the end of the competition, and we've still got a few ideas up our sleeve. It's going to have to be all hands on deck from here on in, but if we stay positive and work together, we can do it!!

Competition Update

The competition in the top 10 is getting tight! Kaiapoi Borough is now sitting in 6th place behind 3 Auckland schools, a Wellington school, and the school just down the road, Woodend. Let's hope the weekend was successful in collecting plenty of empty colgate boxes, we really need then to fight our way back into the top 5! Lets keep positive and do everything we can to spread the word and collect as many boxes as we can this week. The more people we have, the better our chances :)

Friday's Events

Today we managed to collect a total of 23 toothpaste boxes from going around the other classes at our school. Mr George dropped some posters and information to our local high school, and we also talked about the possibility of delivering flyers to local businesses next week. This afternoon we took some photos in front of a green screen so we can use them to make some more posters. Hopefully there will be a few colgate boxes collected over the weekend, look forward to updating our total on Monday! :)

Good Morning, it's Friday!

Good morning (ata marie) from New Zealand and welcome (haere mai) to our international friends that are helping us out. There are 42 days left until the competition ends, so there's still plenty of time to spread the word to other schools, teachers, businesses, family members, sports teams, etc. The more well known our project becomes, the better chance we have of doing well. Yesterday we cracked the 100 member mark in our Edmodo group so the word is getting around. Thank you to our wonderful supporters all around the world, we are incredibly grateful of the time you're taking to help us out :)

Have a great day,

Studio 21.

Thursday's Update

We had a good day today collecting 40 boxes on our daily collection throughout the school. Both of our big containers have been put in place at the local supermarkets and tomorrow we will be looking at making some more to spread around other areas of Christchurch. Not too much action on the international front, but we still have a number of schools collecting for us. Our wonderful friends from PS/IS 266 in New York are doing an amazing job collecting and updating us on how many boxes they've managed to collect! We are waiting in anticipation for their package to arrive in the mail :)

Thank you!

After setting our goal of trying to find a school from each state in America, we have managed to recruit schools from 9 different states to help us! We don't know an awful lot about USA so it's exciting to get new states onboard and learn about them as we go. So far we have schools from New York, New Jersey, Illinois, Florida, Pennsylvania, Maryland, Texas, North Carolina, and West Virginia. We have also had schools from Canada, England, Indonesia, and Argentina express interest in helping us. We are very thankful to all those wonderful people who have offered to start collecting. Kia ora!

Letter from Nicole

To possible toothpaste box donators,
My name is Nicole Nicholson and my school is in a competition to get the most colgate toothpaste boxes so we can win a prize of $12,500 worth of sports gear! Some of my hobbies are playing hockey, doing art, and playing fitness games outside! If our school won the prize I would hope to get some new hockey gear and some tennis equipment! If you could possibly donate some colgate toothpaste boxes to our school we would really appreciate it.
Yours Sincerely,

Nicole Nicholson

Letter from Shanae

To possible toothpaste box donators,
My name is Shanae Edwards-Robinson. My favorite hobbies are netball, singing and dancing and my school is in a competition to get the most colgate toothpaste boxes so we can win a prize of $12,500 worth of sports gear! It would mean a lot to our school, especially after the recent earthquakes we've had in our area, if you could collect some empty colgate toothpaste boxes and send them to us. We would really appreciate it.
Yours sincerely,
Shanae Edwards-Robinson.

Wednesday's Happenings

Today was a relatively quiet day in the competition. We managed to collect 15 boxes on our daily rounds of all the classes in our school, but we've moved up to sixth place! We are very excited that our edmodo group has had 81 new members join and we have also received offers of help from several places around the world including England, Canada, Indonesia, Argentina, and Spain!

We love marking the school's that are helping on our google map and learning a little bit about each place as we go. The map is starting to fill up fast, but we think we can get it to fill up even more! Keep spreading the message so we can get as many different classes onboard as possible; the more schools and classes helping us collect, the better the chances of us doing well and the cooler it is!

Our two big colgate display boxes also arrived today so we are going to put them in the two local supermarkets in Kaiapoi to try and generate some more community support. They will be put in the supermarkets tomorrow morning so we hope they fill up fast!

Box Donations

If anybody would like to donate some empty colgate toothpaste boxes to us there are 3 ways to go about it...

1. If you live in the Kaiapoi community you can drop the empty boxes off at the Kaiapoi Borough School office or at one of the labelled containers at the local supermarkets.

2. If you live in Kaiapoi or Christchurch and can't manage to drop the boxes to our school we will gladly come and pick them up. Email Studio 21 teacher Mr. Dan George at daniel.g@kbs.school.nz and we can arrange for them to be picked up.

3. If you live overseas you can flatten the boxes out and send them to us at this address:

Studio 21
Kaiapoi Borough School
20 Hilton Street
Kaiapoi 7630
North Canterbury
New Zealand

If needed we will happily reimburse you for any shipping costs.

* Note: It is the toothpaste boxes that we need, NOT the toothpaste tubes. Boxes can be flattened out so boxes can be collected in a pile (this makes things much easier).

Dear possible donators,

We are in a competition to try and collect the most empty Colgate cartons and we are looking for any possible carton donators to give us their empty cartons. We are in to win $12,500 dollars worth of sports gear and since of the earthquake we have been repairing our school and we have not got good enough and not enough sports gear. My name is Makarini and I am trying my hardest to get as many boxes as possible. I love playing rugby, touch, basketball, and rugby league so I would definitely put any sports gear we win to good use.

Letter from Shannan

To possible toothpaste box donators,

My name is Shannan Cochrane and I am a member of studio 21 at Kaiapoi Borough School, North Canterbury, New Zealand. As some of you may know we have been experiencing HORRIBLE earthquakes and TERRIBLE AFTERSHOCKS. During the February earthquake my youngest uncle was crushed by a brick wall at his work. it was a matter of seconds between life or death 2 more and it would have only been his legs. 5 more and he would have looked back and said that was a close one. He has a very brave 12 year old daughter who has been coping astonishingly. The earthquakes were tough on everyone at our school but we are being resilient and persevering through. I want to make my uncle proud and am trying my hardest to get as many toothpaste boxes as possible. We would be truly grateful if anybody could donate their empty colgate cartons, they would definitely be going towards a good cause.

Yours sincerely,

Shannan Cochrane
